Recently I was given the opportunity to review an advance copy of a new children’s book, Anna, Kid Engineer by Dr. Shenek Alston. Coming from a home that truly valued a strong education, Alston has taken her passion of learning and created a charming and inspirational story for families of all ages!
From the very beginning, my children were quite taken with the dynamic and colorful illustrations by Joyetta Neogi. Anna, Kid Engineer is the story of 5th grader, Anna, who attends East Creek Elementary. As this year’s Science Fair is approaching, young Anna wrestles with what she should submit for her project. Reflecting back on her submissions over the last two years, she feels uninspired with her past choices (a plain old volcano like everyone else did too – yuck!) and wants better this year!
As a parent, I was absolutely in love with how conscientious Anna was and inspired by her tenacity! As a mom of young boys who tinker with their own creations, I have witnessed their frustration over “failed attempts” at their grand experiments. But, sometimes they need more than mom giving them the extra nudge to try again.

Reading about other children (fictional or not) who do not give up on their dreams is so important. I love how Anna, Kid Engineer portrays these qualities so clearly. Through the support of loving parents who encourage her creativity, she goes on to make this year’s science fair more memorable than ever before!
Hard work, persistence, and determination are just a few of the important themes you will find in this delightful story! It didn’t take our family long to fall in love and we are sure that you will too!
Anna, Kid Engineer is now available as an e-book! You can get your copy of Anna, Kid Engineer directly from the website, which includes an audio version for $5.00. It is also available in paperback and hard cover from Barnes & Noble and Amazon!
